Tehran: A two- week temporary ceasefire has come into effect as a last- minute agreement in the Iran- US conflict. As part of this, Iran has agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for global oil supplies, for safe traffic.
The two sides reached the agreement about an hour before US President Donald Trump set a deadline for the decisive attack. Trump’s stance was that the attack on Iran would be stopped only if the Strait of Hormuz was agreed to be completely and safely opened.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed the ceasefire through the X platform. He stated that the strait would be temporarily opened and that Iran would also stop its own defensive measures if the US attack stopped.
Global oil prices had risen sharply since the conflict began with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The price of oil crossed $100 per barrel and some countries in Asia had also moved to control fuel.
Meanwhile, Iran has said that the ceasefire agreement was reached thanks to the mediation efforts of Shahbaz Sharif and Pakistani Army Chief Azim Munir.
The agreement was reportedly based on a 15-point US proposal and a 10-point Iranian response. It has been announced that ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz will resume in a controlled manner and that the Iranian military will oversee security arrangements.
